Bulgaria & Serbia
After getting out of Bosnia-Herzegovina in one piece, we spent three days covering the 700 miles from Sarajevo to Istanbul. Besides one short detour to the Rila Mountains in Bulgaria for a little hiking, we basically drove straight through Serbia and Bulgaria into Turkey. The biggest reason it took so long was the awful condition of most of the roads. For the entire stretch out of BiH and through Serbia, as well as most of Bulgaria, we averaged 45 mph. The narrow two-lane roads were covered with potholes, donkey's pulling carts, and bad local drivers (definitely the worst in Europe). There's not too much exciting to write about this section of the trip, but we're in Istanbul right now and are having a very interesting time...stay tuned for details!
